The dérive continued to be a critical concept in the theories of the Situationist International, a radical group of avant-garde artists and political theorists that was formed out of the Letterist International, CoBrA, and the International Movement for an Imaginist Bauhaus in the 1950s. The dérive was a critical tool for understanding and developing the theory of psychogeography, defined as the "specific effects of the geographical environment (whether consciously organized or not) on the emotions and behavior of individuals." The concept of the dérive has its origins in the Letterist International, an avant-garde and Marxist collective based in Paris.

The dérive's goals include studying the terrain of the city (psychogeography) and emotional disorientation, both of which lead to the potential creation of Situations. That the most fruitful numerical arrangement consists of several small groups of two or three people who have reached the same level of awareness, since cross-checking these different groups' impressions makes it possible to arrive at more objective conclusions. Though solo dérives are possible, Debord indicates Debord defines the dérive as "a mode of experimental behaviour linked to the conditions of urban society: a technique of rapid passage through varied ambiances." It is an unplanned journey through a landscape, usually urban, in which participants drop their everyday relations and "let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters they find there". The dérive ( French:, "drift") is a revolutionary strategy originally put forward in the "Theory of the Dérive" (1956) by Guy Debord, a member at the time of the Letterist International. Merriam Webster Dictionary states the first use of “left-bank” in literature was in 1915 but it could have existed far prior.A 2004 poster announcing a large-scale dérive in London, led by a psychogeographical society I could imagine Joyce venting and Slyvia replies, “You know what? Screw them, I’ll publish your book!” James Joyce even published Ulysses via Sylvia Beach but she wasn’t his first choice.

It attracted the likes of Hemmingway, Fitzgerald, and many others. Many foreign English language writers and poets probably enjoyed the mother tongue feel of the shop.

In 1919 she founded the famous bookstore Shakespeare and Company. While la Sorbonne and the university district had a lot to do with the bohemian feel, the left bank wouldn’t be what it was in the early 20th century without the help of an American named Sylvia Beach. The artists flocked towards the cheap housing and the traditional wealthy from the right bank avoided the area like the plague – which at times it had. The students didn’t have any money so housing in this part was cheap. If you want to be cool, you can book a room in the Latin Quarter, and when someone asks you where you are staying just reply, “the 5th.” You’d never be able to fit your thoughts into a tweet if you had to spell it out every time you’re talking about Paris! Locals simply say, “the 5th.” instead of the 5th arrondissement.Īlso, in literature, you’ll see it written out as “arr.”. They had the layout changed and now they are in the 16th.Īre you getting tired of saying arrondissement? It is a long word and you can imagine saying it all the time would be taxing – and it is. Passy was a particularly wealthy neighborhood and they didn’t want to be in the new 13th. Apparently, there was a saying, “they were married in the 13th” which was a sort of snide way of referring to unmarried couples cohabitating together. When they first released the plan for the new city layout it put Passy in the 13th arrondissement which infuriated the residents. A funny historical mention came out of the inhabitants of an area named “Passy” which was the 1st in the original 12-arr.
